Well I’ve kind of neglected the site for the past few months. Bad me. We are back, however, and going through a revamp. Those of you who frequent the site will notice a bunch of changes happening over the course of the next week or so. Most notably the entire layout of the site has changed. The site is now much easier for me to update and manage. I’m also in the process of adding pages for all the current movies in the Nightmare franchise. Stay tuned people, it’s gonna get exciting!
One of of the first things you may notice when you start searching for information about the new Nightmare movie is that there’s a lot of haters out there for Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy. Some comments you may stumble upon include ‘He’s no Robert Englund’, ‘He doesn’t look anything like Freddy’ or ‘He sounds awful’. There are tons more but you get the idea. Now anytime a remake(orĀ re-imaginingĀ or whatever) comes around there are always tons of haters. It’s just the nature of the best. Sometimes it’s well warranted(most 70′s and 80′s TV show adaptations kinda blow) but usually people just have to hate things, it makes them feel cool. Well here’s my take on the whole Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy situation.
No he doesn’t look like Robert Englund as Freddy. No he doesn’t sound like that Freddy. No he isn’t that Freddy. No one could replace Robert Englund as his version of Freddy. It’s just not possible, he made that role. He was that role. Thankfully this isn’t that version of Freddy. This is a darker version, a more sinister version. A version that I, for one, am very much looking forward to seeing. We have 8 movies and a TV series with the Robert Englund Freddy. Anytime we want to revisit that masterful portrayal we have plenty of source material. If Jackie Earle Haley was trying to mimic the Robert Englund version of Freddy then that would be a mess. That would be awful. Thankfully he isn’t.
I would suggest to anyone who has any interest in this new movie to go in with an open mind. Jackie Earle Haley is a fantastic actor and I have no doubt his version of Freddy will be, at the very least, intriguing. Remember that this won’t be the quick witted and wisecracking Freddy from the previous incarnation of the series. This will be a darker take on that character. He’ll be more sinister and intimidating. From the trailers it looks like he’ll be more intimidating than manipulating. Will he be better than the Robert Englund version of Freddy? I’m not foolish enough to say I think that will be the case but I do think he’ll be well worth watching.
